CAN YOU IMAGINE NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE AN OYSTER ROAST ?
As the market demands more and more local oysters, wild oyster populations face stress to satiate the local palate and seafood continues to be imported. By farming local, fantastically flavored shellfish, South Carolina Shellfish Growers hope to decrease this stress on the environment and encourage mariculture operations throughout the lowcountry. The availability of local seed that can be farmed year round, along with more viable farming techniques have allowed fisher folk to convert to more sustainable methods in recent years, however, mis-information, antiquated policy, and stringent regulations are bringing this industry to its knees when it has only just begun.
In order to save our wild oyster populations, keep our estuaries healthy, and re-viatilize a once thriving seafood industry, the mariculture industry needs security and stability. Through your support, the South Carolina Shellfish Growers Association can educate the public on the benefits shellfish have on our environment, promote sustainable agriculture, and properly represent themselves to our local legislative community.
